Chapter 10
Lilith's Envy
Lilith, a powerful witch and rival, set her sights on Kaelen. She saw Esme as an obstacle, a mortal unworthy of his affection. Her magical machinations added another layer of peril to Esme's already complicated life.
The air in the market square hummed with a thousand tiny dramas, a symphony of whispered secrets and furtive glances. Esme moved through it like a phantom, her senses attuned to the subtle currents of desire and regret that swirled around her, invisible to most. She saw the blush bloom on a maiden’s cheek as a young man caught her eye, the flicker of longing in an older woman’s gaze as she watched a couple pass, hand-in-hand. These were the raw materials of the gods’ games, the threads Aethel, the capricious deity of love and desire, delighted in weaving and then, with a cruel twist of his wrist, snapping.
Esme had always kept her distance. She’d learned early, watching the wreckage left in the wake of divine intervention, that the heart, when truly given, was a fragile thing, easily shattered by the careless hands of immortals. So she built walls, sturdy and high, around her own. She observed, she understood, but she never participated. Her life was a quiet sanctuary, a place where the gods’ influence, while ever-present, could not quite penetrate.
Today, however, the usual hum of the market felt discordant, laced with a sharper, more focused malice. It emanated from a stall laden with shimmering silks and potent-smelling herbs, where Lilith, a witch of formidable power and even more formidable beauty, held court. Lilith’s gaze, sharp and predatory, was fixed not on the wares, but on Kaelen, who was haggling with a vendor over a length of fine wool. Kaelen, with his earnest eyes and steady hands, was a beacon of genuine affection in a world awash with divine artifice, and Lilith clearly saw him as a prize to be claimed.
