Sleep, once a gentle surrender, now felt like a battlefield where fragmented images of a stranger’s face replayed with relentless clarity. It was the eyes that held me captive – a hollow, desperate blue that seemed to plead for an answer I hadn’t possessed. His gaunt features, etched with a weariness that went beyond physical exhaustion, were seared into my mind, a constant, unwelcome guest.
The vibrant energy that had fueled my work, the sheer joy of seeing smiles light up under the summer sun, felt like a distant memory, a dream from another life. Now, every interaction, every outstretched hand, every grateful nod, was filtered through the lens of that one encounter. Had I said the right thing? Had I done enough? The questions gnawed at me, a persistent ache that no amount of rest could soothe.
I’d often replayed the scene in my mind, dissecting every word, every gesture. He’d approached Derrick first, a shadow of a man lost in the boisterous laughter of families. Derrick, with his youthful exuberance, had called out, a friendly beacon, “Hey, the food’s free!” And then, the man had turned, his gaze sweeping over the park, a frantic search in his eyes. He’d asked Derrick if he’d seen a woman, a woman with children. Derrick, bless his heart, had pointed me out, knowing my heart was always open.
