A Horrific Discovery
Derrick sends a disturbing photo: a police car and a figure hanging from a tree. The narrator's heart plummets as they realize it's the man from the park, a victim of suicide.
The morning after felt heavy, like a blanket woven from a thousand unspoken worries. The sun, usually a cheerful herald of a new day, seemed to cast long, somber shadows across my kitchen table. I’d barely slept, the image of the man’s hopeful, yet desperate, eyes replaying in my mind. His voice, laced with a weariness that went bone-deep, echoed in the quiet of my home. I’d told him it would be okay. I’d given him food, a gesture of abundance meant to soothe, to sustain. But in the dead of night, that promise felt hollow, fragile.
My phone buzzed, a jarring sound that made me jump. It was Derrick, my nephew. I braced myself for his usual cheerful greeting, a stark contrast to the gloom that had settled over me. “Hey, Auntie!” his voice chirped, but there was something different about it, a strained edge that I couldn’t quite place. “Did you see the picture I sent you?”
I fumbled for my phone, my fingers clumsy. The screen glowed, and a picture loaded. My breath hitched. The colors on my phone always seemed a little off, a bit muted, but even through that filter, the scene was stark. A police car, its familiar blue and red lights a cruel mockery of the stillness, was parked near a large oak tree. And then, my eyes focused on what hung from one of its thick branches. My stomach lurched. It was a figure. A man.
