The gas lamps, like jaundiced eyes, bled their weak light into the perpetual mist that clung to the cobblestones. Each exhalation of the city’s breath seemed to carry a secret, a hushed accusation that coiled around my heart. It was a price, I knew, for the audacity of our love, for the sheer, unadulterated defiance of our existence. The Shadow Weaver, a name that had once been a mere flicker in the periphery of my ancient memory, now loomed large, a palpable threat woven into the very fabric of our stolen moments. Its displeasure was not a storm that broke suddenly, but a slow, insidious dampening of the world, a chilling whisper that promised retribution.
Katja, oblivious to the specific nature of the shadows that now stretched longer, colder, around us, felt it too. Her hand, usually so warm against mine, now trembled with a tremor that was not entirely of mortal frailty. Her eyes, those pools of liquid obsidian that had once reflected only curiosity and a burgeoning passion, now held a new depth of apprehension. She looked at me, her brow furrowed, searching for answers I was reluctant to give, for reassurances I could no longer easily offer.
"Vladislaus," she murmured, her voice a silken thread lost in the sigh of the wind, "the air… it feels different. Heavier. As if the city itself is holding its breath."
