Chapter 15
Katja's Awakening
Katja discovers a strength she never knew she possessed. Her connection to Vladislaus seems to awaken latent abilities, blurring the lines of her mortality.
The air in my chambers, usually a comforting cloak of familiar scents – old paper, dried lavender, the faint, lingering trace of Vladislaus’s presence – felt charged, electric. It hummed with an energy that originated not from the city’s fog-choked arteries, but from within me. I paced the worn Persian rug, the silk of my nightgown whispering against my ankles. My reflection in the tall, cheval mirror was a stranger, her eyes too bright, too alive, holding a depth I had never seen before. It was a confusion that had been building for weeks, a subtle shift in the very fabric of my being, and tonight, it had crescendoed.
The incident in the alley – the sudden, disorienting surge of something primal, something other, that had repelled the ruffians with an invisible force – replayed in my mind. It was more than just fear lending me strength; it was a power, raw and untamed, that had erupted from my core. And it had happened when Vladislaus’s name had been spat like a curse, when his very essence, so intrinsically linked to mine, had been threatened.
I remembered the cold dread that had pierced through me then, a terror so profound it had felt like my own blood freezing in my veins. And then, the answering surge, a protective fire that had burned away the fear, leaving behind this strange, potent energy. It was Vladislaus, wasn't it? His presence, his love, was somehow… awakening something within me. Something that defied the simple, fragile mortality I had always known.
