The silence in the chamber was a tapestry woven with unspoken histories, each thread a whisper from centuries past. It clung to the heavy velvet drapes, to the polished obsidian of the desk, to the very air Vladislaus breathed, or rather, the air he did not need to breathe. Beside him, Katja’s presence was a vibrant splash of color against the muted tones of his existence, a warmth that both soothed and agitated the ancient tides within him. Her hand rested on his, cool against his unnaturally chilled skin, and her gaze, steady and questioning, met his across the dim light cast by a single, flickering candelabra.
"You speak of lineage, of burdens," she began, her voice a low murmur that nonetheless carried the weight of her curiosity. "But you speak in riddles, Vladislaus. What pacts bind you so tightly that they cast shadows even on this light we’ve found?"
He drew a slow breath, the motion more ritual than necessity. The question, so direct, so mortal in its earnestness, had been inevitable. He had skirted the edges of this truth for too long, allowing Katja to see only the surface of his torment, the struggle against the primal hunger. But the shadows he had kept at bay were not solely of his own making. They were etched into the very bedrock of his being, a legacy passed down through blood and sacrifice.
