The Vahn-Gahl operative Seris Vahn-Morr tracks Starla, Leo, and Maren to the Miller estate in Lake Forest. A tense confrontation ensues throughout the decaying house as Starla uses her expertise as a document authenticator and her knowledge of high-frequency electrical properties to turn the vintage electrical grid and Kael's broken Lume-Tec Key into a trap, overloads the core, and creates an electromagnetic implosion that vaporizes the operative and permanently severs Earth's dimensional link to the Vahn-Gahl.
The hum grew louder, vibrating through the floorboards of the old Victorian manor. Starla felt it in her teeth, a low thrumming that resonated with the Key's blue pulse on the study desk. She looked up from the generator schematics, her eyes meeting Leo's across the room.
"They're here," she said.
Leo was already on his feet, the duffel bag of Arthur's journals slung over his shoulder. "How long do we have?"
