Chapter 13
Chapter 13: The Voice of the Covenant
The ancient covenant creature confronts Anya and the others in the wrecked chamber, demanding the truth about the broken seal. Anya must decide whether to reveal everything—including the Moon-Blood Prophecy and her own dual lineage—while Vespera attempts to regain control. The creature's awakening triggers a biological response in all mixed-blood beings, healers Jena and Selena find the blood-sickness transforming into a connection, and Korvus escapes custody in the chaos. The chapter ends with Anya making a choice that binds her to the covenant's will, setting the stage for a radical reordering of vampire-hybrid relations.
The dust settled slowly, each particle catching the dim light like grains of frozen time. Anya coughed, her lungs burning, her hand still outstretched toward the shattered vial of Vespera's blood that now pooled across the cracked marble floor. The ancient creature stood before her, and up close it was not quite solid—it shimmered at the edges, as if it existed in two places at once, as if the air itself had decided to take a shape that remembered being something more.
Its eyes were the color of the first night, blackness so deep it seemed to swallow light, but within them Anya saw pinpricks of silver, like distant stars reflected in a pool of oil. It had no clear form—sometimes it looked like a tall figure robed in shadow, sometimes like a wolf, sometimes like a tree whose roots dug into the stone floor. Its voice, when it spoke again, was not a single sound but a chorus of echoes, each overlapping the next.
"You carry her blood," the creature said, and its attention fixed on Vespera, who lay crumpled against the wall, her elegant robes torn, her emerald eyes wide with something she had never shown before: genuine terror. "And yet you are not hers. You are something else."
