The Council hearing begins early as Vespera launches her accusations against Anya, but Anya and her allies counter with revelations about the broken artifact, the Moon-Blood Prophecy, and Vespera's true scheme. Despite the evidence, Vespera springs a final trap using the blood-sickness, forcing Anya to make an impossible choice that ends the chapter with a devastating ultimatum.
The courtyard blazed with torchlight. The horns had stopped, but the ringing in Anya's ears hadn't. She stood beside Lyrael, her chest heaving, her fingers still tingling from the shattered crystal. Vespera's retinue filled the space like a tide of midnight silk and cold emeralds. Guards flanked her, their eyes hollow, their hands resting on weapons that hummed with Council-forged magic.
Lady Vespera stepped forward. Her smile was a blade wrapped in velvet. "Welcome, Anya. I hope you've enjoyed your last moments of freedom."
Anya didn't flinch. She'd spent too long flinching. "I've enjoyed a lot of things you wouldn't understand, Vespera. Like the truth."
