Cornered and desperate, David attempts to sacrifice Sarah to save himself. He implies her secret is more dangerous than his. His selfish nature fully emerges, solidifying him as an enemy within.
The metallic tang of fear had solidified into a constant presence in the air, a fifth, unseen player in their grim game. Eleanor watched David, his eyes darting around the room like a cornered rat. He’d been too quiet for too long, his usual bluster replaced by a frantic energy that vibrated beneath his skin. The disembodied voice had fallen silent again, leaving them in the suffocating quiet, the ticking of an unseen clock the only punctuation to their encroaching doom.
Marcus stood a little straighter, his gaze fixed on David, a protective shield forming around Sarah, who huddled closer to him, her small frame trembling. Eleanor felt a familiar detachment settle over her, a practiced calm that had served her well in far more precarious situations. She observed. She analyzed. And she waited.
“It’s my turn, isn’t it?” David’s voice was a strained rasp, a far cry from the smug confidence he usually wore like a second skin. He licked his lips, his gaze flicking from Eleanor to Marcus, then finally settling on Sarah. “The voice… it said deepest secret. Not just any secret.”
