The disembodied voice, a silken thread of sound that had woven itself into the fabric of their waking nightmare, slithered through the sterile air once more. It was a sound that promised oblivion, a lullaby sung by a phantom. Eleanor felt a tremor run through her, not of fear, but of a cold, sharp dread. This wasn’t a random act of terror; it was an orchestration.

“Such a shame, Eleanor Vance,” the voice purred, each syllable dripping with mock sympathy. “Such a waste of potential. You built a new life, brick by careful brick, only to have it crumble around you.”

Eleanor’s breath hitched. How could it know? The meticulous facade she’d erected, the years spent shedding her old skin, the very act of vanishing – it had all been for naught. The pragmatist in her screamed for composure, for analysis, but a primal terror clawed at her throat.
