Chapter 18
Ashes to Hope
With Malakor defeated and Valerius vanquished, Kaelen stands victorious. The darkness recedes, and the first rays of dawn pierce the perpetual twilight of the ruins.
The oppressive weight that had settled over the ruins, a shroud woven from despair and Malakor’s foul magic, began to lift. It was a slow, reluctant withdrawal, like a tide receding from a shore it had claimed for too long. Kaelen, his body aching with a weariness that went bone-deep, watched as the unnatural twilight that had plagued the Citadel for generations thinned. Through the skeletal remains of the great hall’s roof, a hesitant, golden light, the first true dawn Kaelen had ever witnessed in this desolate place, began to spill. It painted the shattered stone and scattered debris with a warmth that felt alien, yet deeply familiar, like a forgotten memory stirring from slumber.
Lyra, her face etched with relief and a profound sadness, moved to Kaelen’s side. She offered him a small, weary smile, her hand finding his arm, a steadying presence. “It is done, Kaelen,” she whispered, her voice raspy from the battle’s toll. “The darkness has been banished.”
Kaelen could only nod, his gaze sweeping over the scene of their hard-won victory. Lord Valerius lay still, his charisma and ambition extinguished, his treacherous heart silenced. The sorcerer Malakor, once a terrifying force of destruction, was now nothing more than a scattering of ash on the cold stone floor, his malevolence finally consumed by the very power he sought to wield. The air, once thick with the stench of decay and dark magic, now carried the faint scent of ozone and something clean, something hopeful.
