The water city, Lumina, shimmered around them, a testament to a past so grand it felt like a dream. Yet, the silence was a heavy shroud, muffling their every footstep on the pearlescent pathways. Elara traced a delicate etching on a nearby wall, a swirling pattern that reminded her of the constellations her grandfather had so lovingly charted. "It's beautiful, Kael," she murmured, her voice barely a whisper, "but so… empty. Like a perfectly preserved shell, waiting for a creature that will never return."

Kael stood a few paces away, his gaze sweeping across the vacant plazas and silent waterways. His usual guarded expression was softened by a hint of melancholy. "Beauty can be a deceptive cloak, Elara. This city, and all the wonders you've seen since we met, are not merely relics of a forgotten age. They are also warnings."

Elara turned, a question forming on her lips. Kael had been a wellspring of fragmented information, a riddle wrapped in an enigma, but he had always skirted around the direct answers, preferring cryptic pronouncements. Today, however, something felt different. The weight of Lumina’s silence seemed to have pressed a new urgency into him.
