Elara sat by the window, the late afternoon sun warming her face, turning the dusty motes dancing in the air into tiny golden fairies. In her lap, the wooden beads of the necklace, cool and smooth against her fingers, seemed to glow with an inner light. It had been a somber time, these past weeks, since her grandmother’s passing. The weight of her absence was a heavy cloak, and sometimes, Elara felt it would never lift. But today, a different feeling stirred within her, a gentle thawing. She traced the familiar shapes of the beads, and a smile, tentative at first, then fuller, bloomed on her lips.

“Grandmother,” she murmured, her voice a soft breath against the quiet room, “you always said each bead held a story. Today, I want to remember the happy ones.”

It was the bead of the Harvest Festival, the year the entire village had danced until their feet ached, the air thick with the scent of roasted apples and woodsmoke. Elara remembered her grandmother’s laugh, a sound like wind chimes, as they’d twirled around the bonfire, her small hand lost in her grandmother’s strong, warm grip. She could almost feel the rough wool of her grandmother’s shawl brushing against her cheek, hear the fiddles playing a merry tune.
