Old Man Hemlock reveals the full weight of the pact and the sacrifice made. He confesses his guilt for keeping the secret buried for so long.
Old Man Hemlock’s gaze, usually as sharp and unyielding as the gnarled bark of the ancient oak outside his window, was now clouded with a sorrow that seemed to age him further. He sat hunched in his armchair, the lamplight casting long, dancing shadows that made the familiar room feel suddenly cavernous and full of unspoken things. Elara sat opposite him, the locket cool and heavy in her hand, a tangible anchor in the swirling tide of his confession. The air in the small cottage was thick with the scent of dried herbs and the unspoken burden of years.
“The pact,” Hemlock began, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate from the very foundations of his being, “it wasn’t just a promise, child. It was a desperate bargain. A trade.” He paused, his breath catching in his throat. “A trade of life for… for silence.”
Elara’s heart ached for him. She had seen the gruffness, the skepticism, but beneath it all, she had sensed a deep well of pain. Now, it was spilling out, a slow, agonizing trickle.
