Chapter 14
Agnes's Forgotten Glimpse
A chance encounter with Agnes reveals a small, repressed memory Agnes had of seeing something unusual years ago, a detail Elara finds surprisingly relevant.
The air in Willow Creek had grown thick with a peculiar sort of dread, a palpable unease that clung to the cobblestones and seeped into the very foundations of the houses. It wasn’t the kind of fear that came with a sudden storm or a growling dog, but a slow, creeping chill, like a draft from an open grave. Agnes, usually a whirlwind of nervous energy and hurried gossip, seemed to have shrunk in on herself. Her usual bright, darting eyes were now wide and fixed, her hands perpetually twisting the fabric of her apron. Elara found her one afternoon, perched on her porch swing, rocking back and forth with a slow, rhythmic creak that mirrored the disquiet in the town.
“Agnes?” Elara’s voice was soft, hesitant, not wanting to startle the already jumpy woman.
Agnes’s head snapped up, her eyes wide and unfocused for a moment before they landed on Elara. “Oh! Elara, dear. I didn’t hear you come up the walk.” She offered a weak, tremulous smile. “Just… just thinking.”
