The pull was undeniable, a silken thread tugging at Elara’s very soul, guiding her footsteps away from the familiar comfort of her home and towards the edge of town. It led her to a place whispered about in hushed tones, a place of folklore and forgotten promises: the old well. It sat in a small, overgrown clearing, a moss-covered stone circle guarding a dark, gaping mouth. The air here felt different, heavier, charged with a silent anticipation.

As Elara approached, the whispers that had become her constant companions seemed to intensify, swirling around her like an invisible mist. They were no longer the fragmented murmurs of before, but clearer, more insistent, almost coalescing into discernible words. She strained her ears, her heart thrumming against her ribs like a trapped bird. “Lost… so lost…” a faint, child-like voice seemed to sigh, carried on the breeze. “Cold… so cold…”

She knelt by the stone lip of the well, peering into its inky depths. No water was visible, only an oppressive darkness that seemed to swallow the light. Yet, the whispers here were strongest, emanating from the very stones beneath her fingertips. They spoke of sorrow, of a desperate plea, of a bargain struck in the dead of night. Elara clutched the locket, its cool metal a familiar anchor against her skin. She felt a strange kinship with this place, a sense of déjà vu that prickled her skin. Had she been here before? Had she stood on this very spot, listening to these same spectral laments?
