She’d blinked, and the image vanished, leaving only the smell of burnt toast and the familiar, comforting scent of her own kitchen.

Later, walking past the old oak by the town square, a wave of profound sadness had washed over her, so potent it made her knees buckle. It wasn't a sadness she recognized as her own. It felt ancient, a sorrow that had settled deep into the roots of the tree and spread through the very earth. She saw, for a split second, a woman in a faded blue dress, her face etched with a grief so profound it seemed to drain the color from the world. The woman was holding something small and swaddled, her lips moving in a silent, desperate plea.
