Hemlock's Reluctant Truth
Elara confronts Old Man Hemlock with her findings. He reluctantly shares fragments of the truth, revealing his own connection to the town's buried secret.
The air in Old Man Hemlock’s dusty shop always smelled of dried herbs and forgotten histories, a scent Elara had come to associate with hushed truths. Today, however, the usual musty comfort felt charged, the silence between them thicker than the cobwebs clinging to the apothecary jars. She clutched the locket, its cool metal a grounding weight in her trembling hand.
“You know about it, don’t you?” Elara’s voice, usually soft, held a new edge of urgency. She placed the locket on the counter, its tarnished silver catching the dim light filtering through the grimy windows. “The whispers, the moving objects… they’re not just happening to me. And this,” she tapped the locket, “it feels important. It feels like it belongs to the lost child.”
Hemlock’s gnarled fingers, usually busy sorting through dried roots or grinding powders, stilled. His eyes, sharp and usually twinkling with a dry amusement, were now clouded with a weariness that seemed to stretch back decades. He peered at the locket, his gaze lingering on the intricate, faded engraving of a forget-me-not. A muscle twitched in his jaw.
