The city exhaled its usual late-afternoon sigh, a mix of exhaust fumes and the distant clang of a tram. But for me, the air in Westend had a different quality, thick with unspoken things, like dust motes dancing in a sunbeam, each one a tiny, unresolved question. Sarah Jenkins. The name itself had taken on a weight, an echo of the stillness that had claimed her. I’d been to her loft, seen the stark contrast between the vibrant canvases and the brutal finality of her end. Blunt force trauma. A phrase that always felt too clinical for the messy, human reality it represented.

My instincts, honed by years of walking through the debris of other people’s lives, were buzzing. The initial sweep had yielded nothing concrete—no forced entry, no obvious weapon. It was like the killer had materialized from the very air in that loft, delivered their blow, and then dissolved back into the city’s anonymity. Elias Thorne, Sarah’s colleague, had been all smooth words and practiced concern, his alibi a little too polished, a little too convenient. Chloe Vance, her friend, had been a storm of grief, genuine, I thought, but with an undercurrent of something else, something she was holding back.

The lead that had brought me here, to this forgotten corner of the city, was a whisper, a half-heard conversation Chloe had mentioned. Sarah had a “secret place,” a sanctuary she’d retreat to when the world became too much. Chloe hadn’t known where it was, just that it was “somewhere… different.” A cryptic clue, but in this business, cryptic was often all you got. And the way Chloe had hesitated, her eyes darting away, had told me it was more than just a place; it was a part of Sarah that was deliberately kept from view.
