Chapter 13
Aftermath at the Loft
Jamonte returns to Sarah's loft, the crime scene now a place of somber reflection. The vibrant art seems to mock the stillness, a testament to a life cut short.
The yellow tape, a garish slap against the stark white of the Westend Loft building, still clung to the doorway like a persistent, unwelcome guest. It had been two days since I’d stood in this very spot, the air thick with the metallic tang of blood and the cloying scent of cheap air freshener trying its best to mask the inevitable. Now, the tape was gone, replaced by the quiet hum of the building’s ventilation and the distant rumble of city traffic, a sound that felt both too loud and too distant, like a memory struggling to surface.
I pushed the door open, the familiar click echoing in the sudden quiet. The loft was different now. The forensic team had packed up, leaving behind only the ghost of their presence – faint scuff marks on the polished concrete floor, a sterile smell that fought a losing battle with the lingering scent of something acrid and earthy. It was the smell of death, I’d learned, a scent that burrowed into your clothes, your hair, your memory, and refused to leave.
The space, once a vibrant testament to Sarah Jenkins’s creative spirit, now felt hollowed out, a shell stripped of its life. Her paintings, explosions of color and raw emotion, still adorned the walls, their vibrant hues a stark contrast to the muted tones of tragedy that now permeated the air. A half-finished canvas sat on an easel, its abstract forms swirling with an energy that seemed to mock the stillness of its creator. The blues and greens, usually so alive, now felt like a mournful dirge.
