The sterile white of the interrogation room felt like a shroud, a stark contrast to the vibrant chaos of Sarah Jenkins’ studio. Elias Thorne sat across from me, his normally polished demeanor frayed at the edges, like a canvas left too long in the rain. The air between us was thick with unspoken accusations, the hum of the fluorescent lights a low, mournful dirge. He’d confessed, or rather, he’d unraveled, the carefully constructed facade of urbane indifference crumbling to reveal something raw and ugly beneath.
"She… she always got what she wanted, didn't she, Detective?" Elias began, his voice raspy, as if he hadn't spoken in days. He stared at his hands, clasped tightly on the polished table, the knuckles white. "The grants, the exhibitions, the praise. It was always Sarah. And I… I was always in her shadow."
I leaned forward, my gaze steady. "You felt overlooked." It wasn't a question.
