Elara’s world had splintered. The man she had come to know, to feel for, was also the creature of her nightmares. Kael, with his eyes that held the depth of ancient forests and a smile that could thaw glaciers, was the Wendigo. The whispered legends, the chilling presence that had drawn her deeper into the woods, now had a face, a name, a tormented soul. She sat by the hearth in her small cottage, the fire’s flickering light casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mock her confusion. The warmth of the flames did little to chase away the cold dread that had settled deep within her bones.

Her hands trembled as she traced the rim of her mug, the herbal tea long gone cold. The words Kael had spoken, the raw vulnerability in his voice as he confessed his curse, replayed in her mind. He had spoken of the insatiable hunger, the primal urges that clawed at him, the constant battle to remain tethered to his humanity. He had shown her the struggle, the sheer agony etched into his features when the beast threatened to consume him. And she had felt it, a visceral understanding that transcended mere words. But understanding did not erase the primal fear that still lingered, a cold, sharp sliver beneath the surface of her burgeoning affection.

Outside, the wind moaned through the skeletal branches of the trees, a mournful symphony that echoed the turmoil in her heart. It was the same sound that had haunted her dreams, the sound that had whispered promises of both danger and desire. Now, it felt like the forest itself was judging her, the ancient trees witnesses to her impossible predicament.
