A Dangerous Bargain
To protect Elara, Kael makes a perilous deal with a shadowy force, further entangling himself in dark magic. The cost is steep, and the consequences ripple outwards.
The air in the cabin had grown thick, heavy with unspoken words and the scent of pine and something else, something primal and wild that clung to Kael like a second skin. Elara watched him, her heart a frantic bird trapped in her ribs. The raw vulnerability she’d glimpsed earlier was now overlaid with a desperate resolve, a hardening of his gaze that spoke of decisions made in the deepest, darkest hours. He was a creature of shadow, she was slowly, terrifyingly coming to understand, and the shadows were closing in.
“You cannot stay,” Kael said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the rough-hewn floorboards. It wasn’t a suggestion. It was a pronouncement. “Not now. Not with… them.”
Elara’s breath hitched. “Them? Who are ‘them,’ Kael?” She’d asked him so many questions, and he’d answered only what he deemed necessary, or what he could bear to articulate. But this… this felt different. This was a new layer of fear, a new abyss opening before her.
