The scent of dried herbs and old wool always clung to Grandmother Elena’s small cottage, a comforting perfume that Danguolė breathed in deeply. It was a scent of home, of safety, a stark contrast to the hurried, anxious air that had begun to settle over their lives. Today, however, the air felt lighter, softer, like the downy fluff of a freshly sheared sheep. Elena sat by the window, her fingers, gnarled with age but still remarkably nimble, dancing with a ball of deep blue yarn. Danguolė sat beside her, her own smaller hands mirroring her grandmother’s movements, though with a fraction of the speed and none of the practiced
