Chapter 23
Episode 23
The digital hum of the early 2000s had begun to permeate even the quietest corners of Lithuania, a gentle, almost hesitant intrusion. Danguolė, now a woman in her late twenties, felt it in the flickering screen of the secondhand computer Jonas had helped her set up in a corner of her small workshop. It was a tool, she’d decided, not a replacement. She typed hesitantly, her fingers, more accustomed to the nimble dance of needles, feeling clumsy on the keyboard. The website was rudimentary, a digital tapestry woven with the limited knowledge she possessed, but it was a start. “Danguolė’s Handcrafted Treasures,” read the stark white text on a pale blue background, a hopeful whisper in the vastness of the nascent internet.
She uploaded photographs of her work – shawls spun from the finest merino wool, their intricate lace patterns whispering of ancient forests; sturdy, warm sweaters adorned with stylized storks and sun symbols; delicate baby booties, impossibly soft and imbued with the hope of new life. Each click of the mouse was a small leap of faith. She remembered Elena’s stories, tales of weavers whose creations were sought after across borders, their artistry a language understood by all. Could this digital realm, so alien and vast, be a new kind of marketplace, a new kind of village square?
Jonas visited often, drawn by the quiet intensity of her focus. He’d found his own path, a steady job in Kaunas, his life a testament to the opportunities the changing times offered. Yet, he always found time to sit with her, watching her work, his gaze a silent reassurance. He’d brought her a new set of ergonomic needles, a thoughtful gift that spoke of his understanding of her craft. "It's good, Danguolė," he’d said, his voice a low rumble, gesturing at the glowing screen. "It's a way to show them. To show everyone what you do."
