The air in their small apartment, usually thick with the comforting scent of wool and simmering soup, felt thin and brittle. Outside, the early spring rain lashed against the windowpanes, each droplet a tiny hammer blow against Danguolė’s fragile peace. She sat by the table, her needles poised over a half-finished scarf, but her fingers felt stiff, disconnected from the familiar rhythm of her craft. The bright, cheerful yarn, a vibrant robin’s egg blue, seemed to mock her with its promise of warmth.

Jonas had left an hour ago. His departure, unlike his usual boisterous farewells, had been subdued, almost hesitant. He’d spoken of opportunities, of a job in the city that promised more than their village could offer. He hadn’t said it directly, not with his words, but Danguolė had seen it in the way his gaze flickered away when she mentioned her plans for the upcoming market, in the slight tightening of his jaw when she spoke of the new stitch she was mastering. He was looking beyond their familiar cobblestone streets, beyond the knitwear that was slowly becoming her family’s lifeline.

“It’s just… things are changing, Danguolė,” he’d said, his voice low, almost apologetic. “People need things quickly now. Practical things. Not… not quite so many fancy sweaters, maybe.” He’d gestured vaguely, his hands catching the dim light. “This city job, it’s a good chance. For us. For… a future.”
