Mia's Tears
The night before surgery, Mia is quiet. Then, for the first time, she cries. Her voice, usually so strong, trembles with an unfamiliar fear.
The sterile scent of the hospital room clung to the air, a sharp contrast to the soft, familiar hum that had been my constant companion. Tonight, though, the hum was muted, a fragile thread barely holding its form. Mia. She was always there, a vibrant presence woven into the fabric of my existence, but tonight, a hush had fallen over her. The usual symphony of her thoughts, her reassurances, her gentle teasing, had dwindled to a whisper, and even that whisper was tinged with a sadness I’d never heard before.
I lay in the narrow bed, the crisp sheets cool against my skin, my gaze fixed on the ceiling tiles that seemed to stretch into an endless, blank expanse. The tumor, a dark, unwelcome guest, pulsed with a dull ache behind my eyes, a physical manifestation of the fear that now coiled in my gut. But it wasn't the physical pain that gnawed at me; it was the thought of losing her. The thought of the silence that would follow, a silence I hadn't experienced since I was eight years old.
"Mia?" I whispered, my voice barely audible in the quiet room.
