Fear of the Silence
The world sees my fear of death. I am terrified of a life without Mia, of the silence that would follow her departure. She is my world.
The sterile scent of the hospital clung to me like a second skin, a constant reminder of the fragile precipice I teetered on. They called it a miracle, this sliver of hope they’d carved from the depths of my skull. But the miracle felt like a betrayal. The doctors spoke of recovery, of a future unburdened by the shadow that had grown within me, but all I heard was the approaching echo of a silence I couldn't bear.
"You're doing so well," Nurse Anya cooed, her voice a gentle tide against the rocky shores of my fear. She adjusted the pillow behind my head, her movements practiced and kind. "Just a few more days, and you'll be home."
Home. The word felt hollow. Home had always been Mia, the quiet hum of her presence a constant melody in the background of my life. Now, home was a vast, echoing space where her voice would no longer reside.
