A Tumor's Shadow

Doctors reveal a brain tumor. The surgeon's words are stark: surgery could alter memories, emotions, even the voice that has defined my life.

The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to the air, a sharp contrast to the soft, familiar perfume of Mia’s imagined presence. It was a smell that promised cleanliness, a scrubbing away of the unseen, but it did little to dispel the shadow that had fallen over my world. The doctor, a man with kind eyes and hands that had seen too much, spoke in hushed tones, his words measured, deliberate. He pointed to the scans, grey and stark against the light, and traced the unwelcome intruder nestled within the delicate architecture of my brain. A tumor.

My own body, the vessel I’d inhabited for sixteen years, had betrayed me. It was a betrayal I felt on a visceral level, a churning unease that had nothing to do with the physical pain, which was a dull throb behind my eyes, and everything to do with the implication of his next words.

“The surgery,” he began, his gaze meeting mine with a gentle gravity, “is complex. We believe we can remove it entirely. However,” he paused, and the air in the room seemed to thicken, “there are risks. Significant risks.”
