The sterile air of the hospital room did little to cool the fever in my blood. Mia’s last words, a fragile thread woven with an unfamiliar, chilling fear, vibrated in the space between us, between her and me. That’s what scares me. The silence that followed was not the peaceful quiet of shared understanding, but a vast, echoing chasm, pregnant with an unspoken dread that settled deep in my bones. I wanted to ask, to beg her to explain, but the words caught in my throat, choked by the sudden, overwhelming weight of her sorrow. It was the first time I had ever heard her cry, and it was a sound that ripped through the fabric of my world, leaving me exposed and shivering.
Her small hand, which I had held so many times in my dreams, felt impossibly fragile in mine. The touch was as real as the worn cotton sheets beneath me, as real as the faint scent of antiseptic that clung to the room. Yet, even as I felt the warmth of her skin, a cold tendril of doubt began to coil around my heart. Her tears, mirroring my own, were a testament to the depth of our connection, a connection I had always believed to be as solid and as true as the earth beneath our feet. But her fear… it spoke of something I couldn't yet grasp, a premonition that clawed at the edges of my consciousness.
“Mia,” I whispered, my voice raw and trembling, “What scares you?”
