Chapter 7

Elias Thorne's Wary Counsel

Following a lead about a rare book dealer rumored to have an encyclopedic knowledge of local ephemera, Alex visits Elias Thorne’s shop, a labyrinth of overflowing shelves. Thorne, a man whose eyes hold the weariness of centuries, examines Alex's sketch of the symbol. A subtle, almost imperceptible flicker crosses his face – recognition, quickly masked. He offers cryptic advice, speaking of 'stories that refuse to stay buried' and 'texts that carry their own weight of history,' but he stops short of a direct explanation, his wariness palpable.

The bell above the door of "Thorne's Curios & Tomes" gave a hesitant chime, a sound swallowed almost immediately by the dense, papery silence within. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the gloom, illuminating towering stacks of books that leaned precariously, forming narrow canyons of forgotten lore. Alex stepped inside, the scent of old paper, dried ink, and something vaguely floral, like pressed flowers trapped between pages, filling their lungs. His eyes, however, were the most compelling feature – a startling shade of pale blue, they held a depth that suggested they had witnessed more than a single lifetime, a weariness that spoke of burdens long carried. He moved with a deliberate slowness, as if each step was a considered act of navigation through a treacherous landscape of knowledge.

"May I help you?" Thorne’s voice was a low rumble, like stones shifting in a deep riverbed. It held no immediate warmth, but a quiet, professional curiosity.
