The stale air of the diner clung to Liam like a second skin, thick with the ghosts of fried onions and desperation. Alex watched him from across the sticky Formica table, the fluorescent lights of the all-night establishment casting a sickly pallor on his friend’s face. Liam’s eyes, once sharp and full of shared camaraderie, now darted around the room, a hunter’s wariness etched into their depths. He hadn’t touched his coffee, the mug growing cold between his trembling hands.

“You said it was important, Liam,” Alex prompted, his voice a low rumble, a sound that still surprised him with its guttural edge. It had been months since he’d heard his own voice sound anything other than strained or sharp.

Liam finally met his gaze, a flicker of something unreadable in their brown depths. “It is, Alex. More important than you know. It’s about… about what happened. Back there.” He gestured vaguely with his chin, the movement jerky.
