Chapter 9
Healing the Wounded
Trinity defied her family and Daxton, choosing to tend to Kael's wounds. In the quiet intimacy of healing, their bond deepened, a fragile sanctuary built against the storm brewing around them.
The scent of antiseptic herbs and something faintly metallic, the coppery tang of blood, filled the small chamber. It was a scent that had become intimately familiar over the past few days, a stark contrast to the perfumed air of my home. My fingers, usually adept at the delicate embroidery that adorned my gowns, were now stained with poultices and bandages. Kael lay before me, his breathing shallow but steady, a testament to the fragile healing that was taking place.
“Does it hurt?” I whispered, my voice barely disturbing the quiet. I was dabbing a cool compress against a particularly angry gash on his forearm. The skin around it was still unnaturally pale, almost translucent, a sign of the dark magic that had afflicted him.
He stirred, his eyelids fluttering open. His eyes, the color of a storm-tossed sea, met mine. A flicker of something unreadable crossed his face – pain, gratitude, perhaps something more. “Only when I breathe too deeply,” he rasped, his voice rough from disuse. “Or when I think of how I got here.”
