The mask finally slipped. Daxton's desire for the bond wasn't about love, but power. He revealed his intent to control Trinity, his manipulation exposed in a terrifying display of possessive rage.

The air in the grand ballroom, usually alive with the murmur of polite conversation and the tinkling of crystal, felt thick and stifling. It clung to me like a shroud, heavy with unspoken words and the cloying scent of Daxton’s expensive, subtly acrid perfume. We were supposed to be celebrating. Another milestone in the carefully orchestrated symphony of my life, another step closer to the inevitable, glorious union with Daxton. But the music had turned discordant, the smiles of the assembled nobility felt brittle, and the gilded cage I’d always known was beginning to show its rusted bars.

Daxton’s hand, resting possessively on the small of my back, sent a shiver, not of anticipation, but of revulsion, down my spine. His touch, once a promise of warmth, now felt like a brand. He leaned closer, his voice a silken whisper meant only for my ears, yet it vibrated with an undercurrent of something sharp and dangerous. "You seem distracted, my dearest Trinity. Are you not pleased with this evening? It is all for you, you know. A preview of the life that awaits you."

I forced a smile, a practiced gesture that felt as hollow as a drum. "It is magnificent, Daxton. As always." My gaze flickered, seeking out any familiar face, any flicker of genuine warmth. But there was only a sea of expectant eyes, all fixed on me, on *us*, waiting for the grand performance to continue.
