The Silence After the Storm

Dion, exhausted by his own fury, retreats. The apartment fills with a thick, uncertain silence. Rene watches him, her heart pounding. Is this peace, or just the quiet before the next drug-fueled delusion takes hold? The air is heavy with unspoken fears.

The silence that descended after Dion’s last, guttural roar was thicker than the stale cigarette smoke clinging to the threadbare curtains. It wasn’t a peaceful quiet, not the kind you’d find in a library or a forest at dawn. This was a charged silence, a vacuum that sucked the air out of my lungs and left a hollow ache in my chest. Dion stood by the door, his chest still heaving, a wildness in his eyes that made my own paranoia prickle. He looked like a cornered animal, ready to lash out at anything that moved. I stayed frozen on the sofa, my hands clenched so tightly my knuckles were white, trying to make myself as small and unthreatening as possible. It was a familiar dance, this one. Him the storm, me the flimsy shelter, hoping to ride it out without getting blown away.

Dion’s breathing finally began to even out, the tremors in his massive shoulders subsiding. He ran a hand over his bald head, a gesture that usually preceded him collapsing onto the sofa or into bed. But not tonight. Tonight, he just stood there, a hulking silhouette against the dim light of the streetlamp filtering through the grimy window.

“You… you really think they’re watching us?” he rasped, his voice rough, like sandpaper on old wood. He wasn’t looking at me, his gaze fixed somewhere on the peeling paint of the hallway wall.
