The air in the apartment was thick enough to chew, a cloying blend of stale cigarette smoke, cheap air freshener trying desperately to mask something fouler, and the undeniable scent of pure, unadulterated dread. Dion was pacing, a caged animal whose cage had shrunk to the size of our living room. His eyes, usually a rich, warm brown, were now darting, wide and bloodshot, scanning the walls as if expecting them to sprout eyes and report his every move. And I, Rene, with my dreadlocks a tangled halo of defiance and my tattoos a roadmap of past lives and present anxieties, was trying to be the calm in his particular hurricane.

“They’re watching us, Rene,” he rasped, his voice a gravelly whisper that scraped against my nerves. “I saw the flicker. Through the blinds. That old lady next door, Mrs. Henderson. She was peeking. With binoculars.”

I took a slow breath, the kind you take when you’re about to dive into very cold water. Binoculars. Mrs. Henderson. The woman who, just yesterday, had been a kindly old soul offering us a spare egg. Now, apparently, she was a clandestine intelligence operative with a penchant for birdwatching and neighborly espionage. “Binoculars, Dion? Really? You sure it wasn’t just a reflection of the sun on her window? Or maybe she was checking out the new bird feeder she put up.” I tried to inject a lightness into my tone, a playful jab, anything to steer us away from the cliff edge.
