The air in the playroom crackled, not with the usual boisterous energy of five children and their peculiar friend, but with a hushed tension. The shadowy figure, the one they’d chased and coaxed and finally named Melissa, quivered in Leo’s arms, her small, inky form pulsing with a faint, almost imperceptible light. Outside the window, the sky had turned a bruised purple, mirroring the unease blooming in their hearts. The Whispering Man, as Chloe had quickly dubbed him, had retreated for now, his long, grasping fingers no longer reaching through the fabric of their reality. But the fear lingered, a cold tendril coiling in their stomachs.

“He’s gone, isn’t he?” Sam whispered, his usual boisterousness deflated, his eyes wide and fixed on the spot where the shadowy tendrils had receded.

Leo tightened his grip on Melissa, feeling the frantic beat of her tiny heart against his chest. “For now,” he said, his voice steady, though a tremor ran through him. He was supposed to be brave, the leader, the one who shielded them all. But facing that…thing…had shaken him more than he’d let on. He looked at Maya, her brow furrowed in concern, her artistic eye trying to capture the ephemeral fear that still clung to the room.
