He saw the same fierce determination mirrored in Maya’s wide, usually gentle eyes, a glint of defiance in Sam’s restless energy, a flicker of intense calculation in Chloe’s focused gaze, and a quiet, unwavering resolve settling on Noah’s usually placid features. Melissa, sensing the shift, had shrunk closer to Maya, her small, dark form trembling almost imperceptibly.
“You cannot have her,” Leo stated, his voice firm, cutting through the charged silence. He stepped forward, placing himself squarely between the shadowy figure and Melissa. He could feel the raw power radiating from the intruder, a chilling contrast to Melissa’s gentle magic.
The figure, which had no discernible face but seemed to emanate a palpable aura of ancient, possessive hunger, let out a sound that was less a voice and more a scraping whisper, like dry leaves skittering across stone. “She belongs. She is… mine.”
