The air in the Parisian café was thick with the scent of strong coffee and buttery croissants, a stark contrast to the dusty, spice-laden breezes of Kathmandu I’d grown so accustomed to. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, illuminating the motes of dust dancing in its golden beams, but it did little to dispel the chill that had settled deep within me. Across the small, marble-topped table, Aryan’s gaze was a dark, unreadable ocean. He spoke of business, of mergers and acquisitions, of market shares and global expansion, his voice a low, resonant hum that had once been a lullaby and now felt like a siren’s song, luring me closer to a dangerous shore.
“The acquisition in Berlin is proving… complex,” he said, his fingers tracing the rim of his espresso cup. There was a subtle tension in his jaw, a tightening that I’d begun to recognize, a sign that the polished veneer of the successful businessman was beginning to fray.
“Complex how?” I asked, my own voice a little breathy. I tried to keep my tone light, casual, but my heart was a hummingbird trapped in my chest, its frantic wings beating against my ribs. The five years since I’d last seen him had been a blur of rebuilding, of trying to forget the intensity of our brief encounter, of settling into a life that felt, until now, safe and predictable. And then he’d reappeared, a ghost from my past, a phantom limb I hadn’t realized I was still missing.
