The air in the small café, usually alive with the clatter of cups and the murmur of conversation, felt thick and heavy, charged with an unspoken tension that had settled between Aryan and me. We sat across from each other, the remnants of our shared meal a silent testament to a connection that defied logic, a bond forged in stolen glances and whispered secrets. He’d spoken, finally, about his past, about the weight of the empire he’d inherited, the sacrifices he’d made. But each word, though delivered with a gruff honesty, felt like another stone added to the wall he’d been trying to build between us.
"You don't understand, Ramila," he'd said, his voice low, rough like the gravelly edges of his soul. His eyes, those dark pools that had once promised a universe, now held a flicker of desperation, a plea I couldn't quite decipher. "This world... it consumes everything. It's not a place for you."
And I, foolishly, stubbornly, had held onto the image of the man I’d met in Nepal, the man who’d gifted me that intricate silver earring, the man who’d worn a simple chain around his neck. The man who, I now knew, was hiding a darkness so profound it threatened to swallow him whole. Yet, my heart, that traitorous organ, stubbornly refused to listen. It beat a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a testament to the feelings that had only grown stronger, deeper, even as the truth of him became more terrifying.
