The silence of the snow-laden forest was broken only by the soft crunch of Emily's boots and the gentle huff of her breath, a small cloud in the frigid air. She’d followed the trail of disturbed snow, a trail that seemed to lead her deeper into the heart of the woods, away from the cozy warmth of her home and the worried calls of her mother. A strange mix of excitement and a tiny flutter of apprehension danced in her chest. The news reports, the hushed whispers of the townspeople, all painted a picture of a terrifying beast, a monster of myth. But instead of fear, a wave of empathy washed over her. The creature looked… lost. It looked as lonely as she sometimes felt, even surrounded by the bustling life of her town. It was not the roar of a predator she heard in the rustle of its wings, but the soft sigh of a creature burdened by its own existence.
