The air in the Whispering Woods was thick with an ancient hush, a silence that pressed in on Kaelen like a physical weight. Sunlight, strained through a canopy so dense it seemed to swallow the sky, dappled the forest floor in shifting mosaics of emerald and gold. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, seemed amplified, echoing the nervous thrumming in his own chest. He clutched the worn leather pouch containing the star fragment, its faint warmth a constant reminder of the impossible burden he now carried.

He’d been told Elara lived deep within these woods, a recluse sought out only by those desperate for answers the world could no longer provide. Borin, gruff and weathered, had pointed him east, his words a mixture of grudging respect and outright suspicion. "She's a mage, lad. Knows things. But don't expect pleasantries. The woods guard her as much as she guards herself." Kaelen understood the caution. Magic, in his limited experience, was a wild, unpredictable force, capable of both great creation and devastating destruction. And he, Kaelen, was now inextricably bound to its most celestial manifestation.

The path, if it could be called that, dwindled into a mere suggestion of passage, winding between moss-laden oaks and silent, watchful pines. Strange, luminous fungi pulsed with a soft, otherworldly light in the deeper shadows, and the scent of damp earth and forgotten blooms filled his senses. He felt a prickling sensation, as if unseen eyes were tracking his every move, a feeling that intensified the further he ventured. It wasn't entirely unpleasant, more like a profound awareness of the vibrant, living heart of the woods.
