Below, the world was a tapestry of fading greens and browns, distant and serene, a stark contrast to the jagged peaks that clawed at the bruised twilight sky. They had ascended for days, each step a testament to Borin’s unwavering strength and Elara’s quiet, persistent guidance. The air thinned with every foot gained, carrying with it the scent of ancient stone and the sharp tang of ozone, a constant reminder of the celestial energies that pulsed around them.
“Are you certain this is the right path, Elara?” Kaelen’s voice, though muffled by the gale, carried a tremor of weariness. The betrayal still gnawed at him, a dull ache beneath the surface of his resolve. He glanced at Borin, whose granite face was set in a grim mask, his broad shoulders hunched against the biting cold. The warrior had said little since they’d left the shadowed ruins where their trust had been so violently fractured, but his presence was a solid anchor in Kaelen’s swirling thoughts.
Elara, her silver hair a stark contrast to the deep indigo of her robes, paused on a precarious ledge. Her eyes, usually alight with a gentle wisdom, held a distant, almost haunted, look as she surveyed the treacherous terrain. “The celestial currents, Kaelen, they are not always as direct as a river.
