Chapter 5
A Vow in Twilight
Silas makes Liam a solemn vow, a promise that transcends life and death. This commitment binds their souls, marking the beginning of a perilous yet passionate paranormal romance. Liam accepts his fate.
The air in the forest, usually Liam’s sanctuary, now felt thick with a dread he couldn't quite name. He’d ventured deeper than usual, the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of birds a familiar symphony that usually soothed his solitary soul. He was searching for specimens, the quiet thrill of discovery always a potent antidote to the humdrum of his laboratory. But the symphony had abruptly shifted, replaced by a guttural, wet thud that echoed unnervingly between the ancient trees. Liam froze, his hand instinctively reaching for the small, worn notebook in his pocket, a reflex born of years spent documenting the natural world.
Peeking through the gnarled trunk of an old oak, his breath hitched. The scene unfolding before him was a stark, brutal tableau painted against the deepening twilight. A figure, all sharp angles and coiled menace, was swinging a crude, nail-studded bat with a sickening, rhythmic force. The dark, matted hair, the powerful build – it was a man, undeniably so, yet there was an otherworldly aura about him, an intensity that seemed to warp the very air. He wore a long-sleeved green and black shirt, the stark ‘proxy’ symbol emblazoned on the shoulder like a brand. His lower face was obscured by a gas mask, the pale blue lenses of his goggles glinting with an unsettling, predatory light. Jeans, worn sneakers, a messenger bag slung across his chest, its contents – syringes and vials – hinting at something far more sinister than mere violence. The man he was attacking… Liam couldn’t bring himself to look too closely, the sheer brutality of the act a physical blow.
Liam’s scientific mind, usually so adept at dissecting and understanding, faltered. This wasn’t the predictable chaos of nature; this was something else, something chillingly deliberate. Yet, amidst the horror, a strange fascination bloomed. The raw power, the terrifying grace of the attacker, the sheer, unadulterated intensity – it was like witnessing a force of nature unleashed, a primal energy Liam had only ever read about in hushed, speculative tones. He found himself rooted to the spot, a morbid curiosity overriding his instinct to flee. The man’s movements were fluid, almost elegant, despite the gruesome task at hand. Liam felt a pull, a magnetic force drawing him closer, even as his rational mind screamed at him to run.
