The scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, usually a comforting balm to Liam’s solitary soul, was now thick with an acrid tang that pricked at his nostrils. He pressed himself further into the rough bark of the ancient oak, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. Before him, bathed in the fractured sunlight that pierced the dense canopy, was a tableau of horror. The man Liam had glimpsed moments ago, the one with the unsettling beauty and the air of coiled danger, was now fully engaged in his brutal work. The thudding impact of the nail-studded bat against flesh and bone echoed in the sudden, unnatural hush of the woods. Liam squeezed his eyes shut, a wave of nausea washing over him. He’d come for specimens, for quiet observation, for the predictable rhythms of nature, not this… this savagery.

But even through his clenched eyelids, the scene held him captive. The raw power radiating from the masked figure was a physical force, a storm Liam felt inexplicably drawn to. He forced his eyes open again, his gaze fixed on the stranger. The green and black long-sleeved shirt, the stark ‘proxy’ symbol on the shoulder, the dark jeans, the worn sneakers – all details that seemed to anchor the figure to reality, to the tangible world. Yet, there was an ethereal quality to his movements, a fluid grace that belied the violence he inflicted. The gas mask, obscuring the lower half of his face, only amplified the mystery, leaving Liam to wonder about the expression behind the clouded lenses of his pale blue goggles.

The sounds of the struggle, the guttural cries, the sickening crunch, began to subside. A chilling silence descended, broken only by the ragged breathing of the assailant. Liam held his breath, every muscle tensed, ready to bolt, yet rooted to the spot by an unseen force. Then, the stranger moved. He straightened, the bat lowered to his side, still dripping. His head turned, slowly, deliberately, as if sensing Liam’s presence. The pale blue lenses of his goggles swept across the undergrowth, and for a heart-stopping moment, they seemed to lock onto Liam’s hiding place.
