The stark white of the Sodra notice, so innocuous on its own, now seemed to pulse with a hidden venom. Agnė traced the embossed lettering, the words about pension reform blurring into a mosaic of deception. The official narrative, once a clear stream, had become a murky river, its depths obscured by a thousand swirling currents of half-truths and outright lies. Each piece of paper she’d unearthed, each hushed conversation she’d painstakingly pieced together, had chipped away at the edifice of trust she’d once held for the institution. It was not merely a reform, she was beginning to understand, but a meticulously crafted illusion, a stage play where the actors wore the masks of public servants, their hands busy pilfering the props behind the velvet curtain.

Jonas Valaitis, the weary ghost who haunted the periphery of her investigation, had offered fragments, whispers of a “network.” He spoke of connections that snaked through the corridors of power, invisible tendrils reaching into the very heart of the nation’s burgeoning economy. He’d been a beacon, a flicker of light in the encroaching darkness, guiding her with cautious advice and anonymous tips. His weariness, etched into the lines around his eyes during their brief, furtive meetings, spoke of a soul burdened by complicity, a man caught in a tide he could no longer resist. He’d once been a man of principle, a staunch advocate for the very people Sodra was meant to serve. Now, his idealism seemed to have curdled into a bitter resignation, a desperate attempt to atone for sins he felt he could no longer escape.

“It’s not just Sodra, Agnė,” Jonas had murmured during their last clandestine exchange, his voice barely a breath against the rustle of autumn leaves in the deserted park. The moon, a sliver of bone in the ink-black sky, cast long, skeletal shadows that danced with their unease. “It’s deeper. They’ve woven a tapestry, and the threads reach into ministries, into banks, into the very foundations of this new Lithuania we’re trying to build.” He’d pressed a small, nondescript envelope into her hand, his fingers trembling. “This will show you. Just… be careful. They have long memories and even longer reach.”
