The hum of the newsroom was a familiar symphony to Agnė, a comforting chaos of ringing phones, clattering keyboards, and the low murmur of voices. The official pronouncements from Sodra, the bastion of social security, had been a carefully crafted balm, soothing and reassuring. Pensions, they declared, would be reformed, modernized, strengthened. A brighter future for those who had toiled through decades of uncertainty. Yet, to Agnė, the words felt hollow, like polished stones devoid of true weight. She saw the eager nods of the officials, the carefully rehearsed smiles, and a prickle of suspicion, sharp and insistent, began to bloom within her. It was the language of politicians, she knew, a language that could paint a vibrant picture while concealing a desolate landscape.
Her instincts, honed by years of chasing shadows, screamed that something was amiss. The image, a fleeting glimpse on a crumpled flyer tucked into a discarded newspaper, had been the first spark. A cryptic notice, hinting at increased pensions, but with an almost imperceptible tremor in its bold typeface, a subtle discord that spoke of more than simple arithmetic. It hinted at a scheme, a carefully orchestrated illusion designed to mask a deeper, more complex truth.
