The air in the Jurbarko Laikraštis office crackled with a nervous energy that had been building for days. Lina, her eyes bloodshot from poring over Elena’s meticulously copied ledger pages, felt it too. The weight of the truth, once a mere whisper, now roared in her ears. Jonas sat across from her, his usual gruff demeanor softened by a shared tension. He’d seen the raw data, the damning figures that painted Vytautas Kazlauskas not as a pillar of public service, but as a thief in a tailored suit.
“He’s cornered, Jonas,” Lina said, her voice low but firm, tracing a line on the photocopied ledger with a trembling finger. “The transfers. The shell companies. It all leads back to him. He’s been siphoning off the pension funds for months, using it to cover his gambling debts.”
Jonas nodded, his gaze fixed on the paper. “And Elena… she’s risking everything. We need to be absolutely sure before we go public. One wrong move, and they’ll bury us, Lina. They’ll bury her too.”
