The ink on Lina’s published exposé had barely dried, yet its tremors were already shaking the foundations of Sodra. The Jurbarko Laikraštis, usually a quiet fixture on kitchen tables and café counters, had become a hot commodity, its pages practically snatched from newsstands. The headline, stark and accusatory, screamed the truth that Lina had painstakingly unearthed: "Sodra's Pension Promises: A Greedy Grasp at Our Future!"
Within the hallowed, if somewhat dusty, halls of the national social security institution, a different kind of storm was brewing. Vytautas Kazlauskas, his usually immaculate suit seeming to cling uncomfortably to his frame, paced his plush office. The air was thick with tension, the hushed whispers of his subordinates barely masking their panicked fear. He’d seen the newspaper. He’d read the words. And he knew, with a cold dread that settled deep in his gut, that his carefully constructed empire of deceit was teetering on the brink of collapse.
“This is… unacceptable,” Vytautas spat, his voice a low growl that barely concealed the tremor of panic. He stopped pacing, his eyes fixed on a framed photograph of himself shaking hands with a government minister – a relic of his supposed respectability. “A mere provincial rag. How could this… this child… uncover what we’ve so meticulously hidden?”
